IRVINE, Calif., August 30, 2012 – EON Reality, the world’s leading interactive 3D software provider, today announced that Lycee Carnot, a technology-focused high school in Roanne, France, recently acquired a new Virtual Reality space to its campus, thanks to a partnership with EON Reality and the Association APRV of Clermont-Ferrand.

The implementation of this new Virtual Reality space will allow students to visualize their design work through virtual prototyping, a technique used in the process of product development that uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software to validate a design before committing to making a physical prototype. This is done by creating interactive 3D computer generated geometrical shapes (parts), then combining them into an « assembly » for testing of different mechanical motions, fit and function, and/or aesthetic appeal. For students, this promises to be highly beneficial, as there is a strong interest and real value in visualizing virtual prototypes of mechanical assemblies and architectural systems, especially in 3D stereoscopic mode and 1:1 scale.

At Lycee Carnot, virtual prototypes are used in two different ways. If the virtual prototype already exists as a CAD model, then 3D visualization will help students to better understand its structure and how it works. Otherwise, models will first be produced by students and virtual reality will be used to validate its design. Lycee Carnot will use EON Studio authoring software to create interactive 3D applications for the 3D projection system, based on volumetric CAD models developed by Lycee Carnot.

Lycee Carnot’s Virtual Reality space is based on passive technology and uses polarized filters and 3D glasses. The 3D projection screen, which is 2.3 m. wide and 2 m. high, will provide high level immersion for its users.

« CAD software is quite common in today’s technical education and Virtual Reality is following the same path. We are excited about now offering Virtual Reality software and technology to our students since this is the working environment of the future, » said Jean-Marc Champlong, Project Manager, Lycee Technologique Carnot.
