GROUND CREW VR TRAINING

THE CHALLENGE

A leading aviation company needed an enterprise wide solution that could be quickly deployed to train their employees in safety, operation, and maintenance procedures. The solution needed to be as realistic way as possible, not require purchasing additional equipment, and letting trainees practice dangerous procedures safely. Current training leans heavily on classroom study or role play exercises that do not fully capture the realism of the situation or cause safety concerns themselves.

  • Difficult To Track
    Classroom work does not mirror the on the job situations the trainees would experience. This combined with actual equipment needed for hands on experience results in less practice and makes performance harder to track.
  • Fit into current training
    The new training solution needed to utilize their existing equipment infrastructure as well as fit into their existing training programs to speed adoption.
  • Must be easy to use
    Tech literacy is a big concern with some members of the team being unfamiliar with VR or AR technologies. The application would have to be deployed in a familiar format to speed adoption and be easy for a new user to navigate.

THE SOLUTION

EON Reality developed a series of application for the company that guided both the pre-flight checks on a Boeing 777 and on ground crew procedures for a landing aircraft. Both of these modules run on iOS or Android phones and tablets in either 2D or VR modes. Trainees can get realistic practice of parking a jet at a terminal and actually take the necessary steps to get a 777 ready for take off. Through the Mobile VR experience, trainees with a google cardboard can get an immersive 3D view of the subject matter whenever they need it. Also, their progress is tracked and sent to a Learning Management System which lets the company understand how the trainees are performing and who needs additional practice.

Performance tracking

The all digital nature of VR training allows for the tracking of the trainees performance, not just the end result. This gives the company a granular view of their activities and can correct minor procedural flaws before they become bigger problems.

High Fidelity

The combination of 360 rendered photospheres and 3D models gives the applications great performance while not sacrificing visual quality. Realism is important and without it the applications would be difficult to use and to integrate into current training programs. This also makes scaling the solution to future VR hardware much easier.

THE RESULTS

The company received a the two modules as a pilot to test the use of mobile VR in their training classes. The use of mobile phones and tablets as the device of choice means that the pilot can quickly expand to an enterprise wide solution, as no special hardware will be required.
